It doesn’t take a whole lot of effort to knock a hole (or two) into a plasterboard wall. Fortunately, repairing it is a relatively simple matter, and only requires a few hours to do. Your approach will depend on whether you’re dealing with a crack, a small hole, or a very big hole. Needless to say, repairing massive holes in drywall can be a little more involved than patching up a crack: Required Equipment You will need the following items: Utility knife Putty knife Damp sponge Plaster adhesive Joining tape Measuring tape Key saw Vacuum cleaner Safety glasses Sandpaper (of various grits) Paint in the appropriate colour The above items are your tools for the job. For the actual repair, you will need replacement plaster. If you’re looking at a small crack or hole, a liquid plaster compound or plaster cement will suffice; if the hole is significant in size, you will need a gypsum board that is of the same thickness as the original. Wear the safety goggles at all times – not only to protect from sharp shards of gypsum, but also to keep plaster dust out of your eyes. Repairing Small Cracks and Holes Clean up the hole by removing any loose pieces of paper and plaster with the utility knife; use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of any fine particles. Using the putty knife, apply a layer of plaster cement to the damaged area. Allow 4 hours for it to dry. Once it is dry, apply a second coat if necessary. If you are happy with the result, use the sandpaper to sand down the patch until it is level with the rest of the wall. Use the damp sponge to clean up after sanding. Finally, paint the repaired area – it should now look good as new! Replacing Large Sections of Drywall If a significant chunk of your drywall is missing, you will first need to cut around the hole to straighten out the edges; try to end up with a straight, rectangular hole. Expand the hole horizontally on both sides, until you reach support beams on both the left and right sides of the hole. Aim to have a small section of the support beam exposed – this will provide backing for the replacement board. Using the measuring tape, determine the exact dimensions of the hole, and using the key saw, cut out a piece of your replacement plasterboard to those exact dimensions. Apply the adhesive to the support beam (a few dots should suffice – this depends on the size of the hole in the vertical direction), and place the replacement board into the hole. Secure the edges with the joining tape, taking care not to overlap the tape at any point. Once the replacement board is secure, go over the joints with the plaster cement, and sand it down when dry.
